GST Return Filing Checklist for Businesses

A clean GST return starts with clean monthly records. This checklist helps reduce mismatches, blocked credits, and avoidable notices.

1. Match sales invoices with books

Confirm invoice numbers, dates, GSTIN details, taxable value, tax rate, place of supply, and credit notes. Gaps in invoice sequence should be explained and documented.

2. Review purchase entries and ITC

Input tax credit should be supported by supplier invoices, receipt of goods or services, and supplier reporting. Reconcile purchase data with available portal records before claiming credit.

3. Check e-way bill and e-invoice data

Where applicable, e-way bills and e-invoices should match the books. Differences between movement documents and returns can create compliance questions.

4. Reconcile cash ledger and liability

Before filing, check tax payable, credit available, interest, late fees, and cash ledger balance. This prevents underpayment and last-minute payment confusion.

5. Keep working papers

Maintain a simple file with sales summary, purchase summary, ITC reconciliation, credit/debit notes, and payment proofs. Good working papers make future review much easier.
